Coaches! 101 Play of The Week!
Well, we have been away from the program because of the Literacy Tour; our key writer has been on doing. Even though by popular demand we are back. Coaches! 101 is Fired Up! And Ready To Go.
This play is called the Spread 1 strong 31 trap.
A coach will train his student athlete on the basics of good splits. Since the key player in this offensive set will be the play-side guard. He will release inside to block down on the middle LB, and while he is doing this he would use the inside eye technique block to seal the block on the play. This will keep the LB in front of him sealing him away from the ball carrier. A inside eye technique is a block that shows the ball carrier your but pad, as he follows that block. The play only begins, when the play-side guard makes that influence block on the DE. The influence block stops the momentum of the defensive end crash and chasing down the line once the existing blockee left the scene.
Then you will train your center to smack hard down on the nose guard with a face and guide way block. This is a new technique that is used in the high quality high school programs. Stay tuned to the face block! Then a coach will teach their weak side guard on pulling to the play-side and trap the DT. The back-side of the play should be covered with the weak side tackle. The weak side tackle will have the job of blocking the DE and then chipping the DT, while getting up field to smash the free safety. The play side WR will be the cut of block and stalk block for the play-side corner back. While everyone else stalk blocks their covering back. Here’s when the play begins! You will have your QB take three weak-side steps, and hand the ball to the TB. Your TB will step to the weak-side to show pass protection. Then take the hand off and cut into the play-side leg of the center. Better yet, follow the weak side guard into the hole.
Many of the coaches are wondering what is a face and guide block. Well, this block is a typical block that will allow the running back to read off of the blocking member. It is a moving zone block, and this block if done correctly will create an all-area lineman.
How do you sustain this block? As you’re intended blocking athlete is targeting the block. He will chop his way threw the intended hole with his body square. Once his body is square, instead of using the hands he will engage with his shoulder, and after shoulder contact, this athlete will move his hips in the direction of the hole the play is going. Once his hips are in place he will stalk, or pass block the intended block.
If this is done correctly, the intended block will be whipped out of the play, and will not be able to chase, scope or recover on the play. This will turn a 3-yard play into a 10 to 15 yard play.
